Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, the celebrated idol of Bengal was born on 26 September 1820 at Birsingha in the district of Midnapore. His parents were Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and Bhagabati Devi. He had his early education in village pathsala. Then he studied at Sanskrit College, Kolkata. Completing his education he became a teacher of Sanskrit College. Later on, he became its principal.

He also worked as an Inspector of Schools for some time. He was a man of vast learning. People used to call him ‘Vidyasagar’. He contributed a lot to the spread of education and founded many schools. He wrote many books. He was also a great social reformer. He stood up for the widow marriage and introduced it. This great soul set off for his heavenly abode in 1891.

He came from a poor family. His father was Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay and his mother’s name was Bhagabati Devi.

His early education started at a village pathsala. He was very meritorious from his childhood. Later he came to Calcutta with his father for higher education and was admitted to Sanskrit College. There he got the title of Vidyasagar. Having completed his academic career, he became the Principal of Sanskrit College.

His attempt in spreading education, especially among the Women-folk, indicated a new era. He had a role in ‘widow marriage’ and other social reformations too. He was famous for his kindness, honesty and wisdom. He breathed his last on July 29, 1891. Still now he is remembered as Vidyasagar.

Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born in 1820 at Birsingha in the district of Midnapur. His father was Thakurdas Bandopadhyay and mother was Bhagabati Devi. He had his early education at his village pathsala. Later he studied at Sanskrit College, Calcutta.

Subsequently, he taught at Sanskrit College and finally became its Principal. Vidyasagar had a great love for learning and worked hard for spread of education amongst the people. He wrote books like Barnaparichay, Bodhodoy, Kathamala, Sitar Banabas and many others. He gathered vast knowledge and became famous for that. For this, he was called Vidyasagar- the ocean of learning.

Vidyasagar was also noted for his sympathy and kindness for the poor and did a lot for them. He also had great love and respect for his mother., Vidyasagar was also a great social reformer’ and fought for removing social evils. He stopped child-marriage and introduced widow re-marriage. This great man died in 1891 at the age of 71.

We all know the name of Ishwar Chandra. But he is more known to us by Vidyasagar. Vidyasagar was born at Birsingh in Midnapur in 1820. He was a son of a poor family. Thakurdas Bandyopadhyay was his father and his mother was Bhagabati Devi, who was a noble lady.

He had his early education in primary school in his native village. After completion of his days at primary school, he came to Kolkata for his higher studies and read in Sanskrit College. It was only reading what he liked most. Most time he read all night.

He became a great scholar. In his young age and was thus called Vidyasagar for his vast knowledge and wisdom. He became the Principal of Sanskrit College. For some time he was appointed an Inspector of schools. It was his mother who influenced him greatly and whom he never disobeyed.

He was very simple in his lifestyle. A white dhoti and a chadar were his favourite wear. He was really a kind and charitable man who always helped the poor in need. Vidyasagar was also a great social reformer. In his times child marriage was a curse, in our society. Vidyasagar stopped child marriage by virtue of Law. Re-marriage of Hindu widows is acclaimed as his best work in life. To educate the girls of his country he set up girls’ schools and colleges. For the poor children, he founded a few institutions free of fees. He died on July 29 1891. He is still alive in our hearts.
